Background of the study
In recent years, online research tools have revolutionized academic writing by providing students and researchers with easy access to scholarly articles, databases, citation tools, and collaborative platforms. These tools, such as Google Scholar, Zotero, and Turnitin, offer students the ability to conduct in-depth research, organize their findings, and ensure academic integrity through plagiarism detection (Lewis & Allen, 2023; Wang, 2024). The use of online research tools has been shown to improve the quality of academic writing, streamline the writing process, and increase the overall productivity of researchers.
In Maiduguri, Borno State, university students have increasingly turned to these tools to enhance their academic writing. However, there is limited research on how these tools specifically influence the academic writing skills of university students in the region. Given the unique educational challenges in conflict-affected areas like Maiduguri, including limited access to physical libraries and research materials, it is important to examine how the availability of online research tools affects the quality of students' academic work.
Statement of the problem
Despite the availability of various online research tools, university students in Maiduguri face challenges in utilizing these tools effectively. Factors such as inadequate training on the use of these platforms, inconsistent internet access, and limited technical support may affect how well students can leverage these resources for academic writing. There is a need to assess the extent to which these online research tools enhance or hinder academic writing among students in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, particularly in terms of improving research quality, citation accuracy, and overall writing proficiency.
